A donor-recognition event celebrated the transformative power of scholarships.

A university education can be life-changing. Yet for many students at Lebanese American University (LAU), that opportunity always seemed out of reach. The dreams of these bright young people were only able to become a reality through the generosity of people who chose to believe in their potential. On September 3, 2026, LAU’s Office of Advancement welcomed a number of those donors to the LAU Beirut campus to express the university’s gratitude.

LAU President Chaouki T. Abdallah warmly thanked the donors in attendance, underscoring the profound impact of their gift. “I’ve always believed that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not,” Dr. Abdallah said. Many students in Lebanon have the intelligence and ambition to succeed but lack the means to act on them. “A scholarship closes that distance between talent and opportunity,” he said. For Dr. Abdallah, the topic is more than a mere abstraction. The president spoke of his own experience in school in Lebanon, one made possible only because others believed his education was worth investing in. He noted that 80 percent of LAU students currently receive financial aid, more than at any other university in Lebanon, emphasizing that access to education “has been part of the DNA of this institution from its earliest days.”

At the event, LAU scholarship recipients spoke candidly about their lives. They shared stories of parents whose own education had been interrupted by war or hardship, and of families who had once feared that a university education would remain beyond their reach. They also recalled the moment they learned they had been awarded a scholarship, a moment that opened the doors to a brighter future.

The students also had the opportunity to engage with donors, deans and faculty members, discussing their career aspirations as well as the volunteer work they undertake alongside their studies. Their stories offered a clear demonstration that donor support not only gives young people access to a university education, but also the opportunity to build a future and contribute to their communities.

Vice President for Advancement Juhi Dagli praised the donors for believing in the power of education to change lives.

“You choose to look beyond the present moment,” Dagli said. “You see not only who our students are today, but who they may become tomorrow. You believe that talent deserves opportunity, and your generosity reflects optimism and faith in the future.”
